Welcome back Hanover High!

Last year was such an amazing year for the Pen of Iron, and I predict this year being just as successful. Last year we lost several of our editorial board. And while we wish them all the best in college, we miss them quite a bit. Now it's a new year, and that means we need new students to take their place!

Look for Pen of Iron at the HHS activities fair on Friday September 6th, and sign up for our email list...we may even have candy for you.

Pen of Iron is an amazing project to be part of, and we are always looking for new faces to discuss and work on the book with us.

Best of luck to all HHS, and we hope to see some of you this Friday!

I hope you enjoy this featured piece from last year...

Through the Eyes of a Child
By Meredith Mackall

Here
Take these glasses
And have a look at the world
Through the eyes of a child.
There’s a kind of magic
Don’t you see it?
See how the light filters through the trees
A sprinkling of gold dust settling on your shoulders
Can you see that bird?
You’ve never seen it before
Have you?
Look at its feathers
Each one is different
A myriad of colors
So many that you couldn’t name them all
If you tried.
Look, it’s turning towards us.
Its eyes are striking
You can’t look away
Can you?
It’s spreading its wings
They’re bigger than the both of us
It’s so beautiful
Don’t you think?
Like it’s of another world.
Take off the glasses.
Look again.
The bird’s gone.

Featured Piece

A featured piece from last year's book. Look again later in the week for a piece from this year!

Although I may not seem like much at all
By Brett Morrison

Although I may not seem like much at all
With my lonesome way and varied drawl
There is still a luster lit within
Though it's been dimmed, to my chagrin

I have thought these things for some time now
And I want you to know; but don't know how
To spell the words of my adoration
Whilst avoiding pain and misinterpretation

But now I'll spell it as clear as I am able
Because even when I feel unstable
When I think of you, everything is level
For your manner could even charm the devil

When you look at me with your eyes azure
Reality becomes so unsure
I could swear that I am lost at sea
A weary sailor with nowhere to be

When I gaze upon your sincere grin
I remember how long it has been
Since I have seen an expression so real
Or a person so full of zeal

So I guess what I am trying to say
Before I get too carried away
Is that I adore you in your every facet
Your charm lulls me so warm and tacit

So although I may not be much at all
Just a lonely boy who lacks in gall
Please my dear, try to understand
And allow me to extend my hand

The Pen of Iron is almost ready to come out! We are in full on production mode right now, working hard to get published as soon as we can!

In a few short weeks join us for some bake sales in the HHS Atrium for treats and to get your copy of the book!

We hope you are all looking for the end of the year and will join us at graduation to appreciate all of our fantastic seniors and have your final chance to purchase the book!
